Course Description
These easy-to-use training packs were developed to supplement the Marketing 101 online course. After you have finished Marketing 101, you can use these 8-lessons to train your staff. Each lesson contains:

  • 1 customizable PowerPoint deck
  • 1 lesson plan
  • 1 activity sheet
  • 1 handout (available in English and Spanish)
  • 1 case study (available in English and Spanish)

The course is divided into eight lessons:

  Marketing Plan: A Road Map for Success
The first lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concept of marketing, written marketing plans, and the importance of their role in marketing your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Define marketing
  2. Describe a marketing plan
  3. Talk about their role in marketing your program
  Target Markets: Eyes on the Prize
The second lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to mission statements and target markets and discusses their importance in the effective marketing of your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Discuss mission statements
  2. Define target markets
  3. Describe your target market
  SWOT ANALYSIS
The third lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concept of SWOT analysis and the importance of its role in the development of marketing plans for your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Define SWOT analysis
  2. Discuss the importance of a SWOT analysis to marketing plans
  3. Describe your program's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats
  Messages for Success: Effective Customer Communication
The fourth lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concepts of benefit statements, marketing messages, and the importance of translating benefit statements into messages that grab the attention of your target audience.
This lesson's objectives for your staff are to:
  1. Define a benefit statement.
  2. Define a marketing message.
  3. Translate a benefit statement into a marketing message.
  Collecting Data: Watching and Listening = Data Collection
The fifth lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concept of data collection and its importance in marketing your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Define the two types of data collection
  2. Discuss the importance of careful data collection
  3. Describe your role in data collection
  Becoming Customer Centered
The sixth lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concept of customer centered programs and the importance of A+ customer service for your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Define customer centered
  2. Describe some benefits of becoming customer centered
  3. Discuss ways to deliver A+ customer service every day
  Communication: Listening, Reading, Texting, and Clicking
The seventh lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concept of communication and its role on marketing your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Identify 3 communication channels
  2. Discuss choosing the right channel
  3. Identify effective ways to communicate with students and families
  Community Relations: Creating a Positive Public Image
The eighth lesson in the Marketing 101 series introduces your staff to the concept of community relations and to the importance of their role on marketing your school nutrition program.
This lesson's objectives are to:
  1. Define importance of community relations
  2. Describe key messages for all school nutrition conversations
  3. Discuss role of staff in promoting positive community relations
